Recently, more movies have been added to Netflix. The complete four movies of the Hunger Games are now available. I am always drawn to films with themes about fight against injustice and the overthrowing of evil. This series though fictional, highlights the power of hope that can be applied in real life.
One of the notable quotes was spoken by the heartless dictator President Snow. “Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained.” He was referring to the protagonist Katniss Everdeen, a commoner who ignited rebellion and eventually toppled down his reign of terror. He was right, he was not able to contain the rebels' fire of determination that was kindled through the tiny spark brought about by the heroine.
We can never underestimate the power of hope. One inspiring real-life story is the incredible survival of 33 men in Chile who were trapped underground from a mining accident. They were locked in a confined area for a record 69 days. Take note, ALL of them survived. I could just imagine the thoughts and conversations that occur daily. I can’t picture myself being trapped in a small dark area for a day more so for 69 days with meager resources. There were for sure a few of them that decided not to give into fear and despair. This allowed them to think straight, remain focused and plan for survival until rescue comes. Then these few men must have inspired the rest of the group and kept the morale up constantly. They held on to a common vision of being rescued and reunited with their loved ones.
We can make our own story as agents of hope. This pandemic situation is a perfect setting to put this in motion. At the time of this writing, the vaccines have been distributed to three countries already. This week Canada and US dispersed to several provinces/states. UK began their own injections last week. We still have months to go before vaccines can reach all provinces, countries and eventually our homes. We can be like those men in Chile, keep the morale up within our own circle of influence as we move forward to a Covid free world.
In this Christmas season, may we spark hope where it is needed. It starts small but can go a long way. It may be as simple as a word of encouragement, a phone call, delivering a bag of groceries, volunteering on food banks/charitable institutions, doing errands for others and so on. More importantly, I urge you to put your hope in a True God, not on men nor material things that can easily perish, disappoint or fail. Believing in the Right Source renews our strength and help us carry on. Only then can we be effective agents of hope.
Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
1 Peter 1:3-6
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
